Objective : To evaluate the relationship between twin birth weight difference and adverse neonatal outcome
Methods : We used the 1999 to 2005 matched multiple birth file for Dongguk university hospital twin births(n=91). Birth weight discordancy was defined as the ratio of the difference in birth weight of the heavier from the lighter twin to that of the heavier twin and was categorized as <15%, 15-25% and ≥25%. We evaluated the risks of neonatal morbidity and mortality(within 28days after birth).
Results : The prevalence of birth weight discordance ≥ 25% among twin pregnancies was 6.6 %. Birth weight discordance ≥ 25% was associated with higher neonatal mortality as compared to twins with lower birth weight discordance
Conclusions : In twin gestations, the use of a 25% weight difference to define twin birth weight discordance seems to be clinically relavant in identify those infants at risk for adverse perinatal outcome.
