      As natural gas has been recognized as clean fuel which is safer than other energy sources and barely releases pollutants during combustion, domestic consumption of natural gas has increased gradually since its introduction.
      In Korea, three production sites have been operated for smoothly supplying natural gas, and natural gas supply facilities have increased gradually. However, since the gas consumption regions are intensively distributed in the metropolitan area and the Busan region, the lowering of pipe end pressure may appear when the demand for natural gas increases in a specific time zone. Also, the lowering of pipe end pressure may be caused by increased gas use owing to the change of land planning or the rise of the population in the pipe end region.
      In order to solve the lowering of pipe end pressure in a situation where the maximum allowed operation pressure in gas supply is limited to 6.86 MPa, it is necessary to reinforce facilities such as the increase of piping or the installation of a pressure boosting facility. However once the piping is increased, it takes considerable time and costs in accordance with construction. Therefore, it is necessary to review how to supply natural gas by adjusting the maximum operation pressure of piping upward while utilizing existing piping and facilities. Nevertheless, since there are no law or technical standards specified regarding the upward adjustment of operation pressure of existing piping under operation in Korea, it is required to conduct research into the safety of piping in accordance with the upward adjustment of the operation pressure of piping.
      Subsequently, this study investigated relevant standards and procedures based on the case of the upward adjustment of the operation pressure of piping at home and abroad, and proposed how to adjust operation pressure upward, which may be applied to the piping of natural gas in Korea. In addition, the study confirmed the safety of upward adjustment of the maximum allowed operation pressure in gas supply from 6.86 MPa to 7.35 MPa by applying it to the piping of natural gas in Korea.
