거리풍경에서 증가하는 소비사회의 특징 읽기: 인도 께랄라(Kerala)주 꼬치(Kochi)시에 대한 연구 = Reading the Characteristic Features of Consumer Society on the Street Landscapes of Kochi Municipal Corporation

This study describes and analyzes the street landscapes of Kochi Municipal Corporation, relying on Baudrillard’s theory of consumer society (la société de consommation). The aim of the study is to show that typical components of a consumer society are increasing in the street landscapes of the city. It is also an attempt to connect the micro work of recording the landscapes of the street, that is, the space of everyday life, with the macro work of analyzing the social change of the city.
The characteristic features of consumer society that are found out in this city are as follows. First, the growth of the volume and number of shopping malls of Mahatma Gandhi Road, or “M. G. Road” shows the enormous consumption power of the city. Second, big show–windows and signboards come into fashion in M. G. Road. According to Baudrillard, show–windows and signboards serve for the social training of consumption through spatial and symbolic intervention. Lastly, there are many empty buildings being neglected for a long time in M. G. Road. Such a building is characterized by porosity, which is contrasted with the sealed of large–size shopping malls. The contrast tells that this street is a space which requires not the porosity of building but the closure. Such closure contributes to the social training, that is, ‘learning by rote’ of consumption in the streets. In the end, the typical components of a consumer society are increasing even in the city, Kochi, where the people’s educations and union activities of communist parties have been actively deployed, which tells the strong propagation power of a consumer society.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 보드리야르의 소비사회 이론에 의존하여 꼬치시의 거리풍경을 기록 및 분석한다. 이러한 작업의 목적은 이 도시의 거리풍경에서 소비사회의 특징이 증가하고 있음을 드러내는 데 있다. 또한 이는 일상생활 공간을 기록하는 미시적 작업과 사회변화를 분석하는거시적 관점을 연결하고자 하는 시도이기도 하다. 오늘날 꼬치시의 거리풍경은 급격한 변화를 겪고 있는데, 마하뜨마간디로드, 즉 “엠지로드”의 거리풍경에서는 소비사회의 특징들을뚜렷하게 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 엠지로드의 대규모 쇼핑몰들은 그 크기와 수의 증가만으로도 막대한 소비력을 드러낸다. 둘째, 보드리야르는 소비사회의 주요 특징으로 쇼윈도 및 광고판을 강조하며, 이러한 쇼윈도 및 광고판이 소비사회에서 소비를 훈련하는 교육현장으로서 기능하고 있음을 밝힌다. 최근 엠지로드에서는 대형 쇼윈도, 대형 광고판 등이 유행하고 있는데, 이는 물리적 장치와 상징적 개입을 통해 소비를 훈련하는 주입식 교육현장을 보여준다. 한편 엠지로드에서는 대형 쇼핑몰뿐 아니라 빈 건물 또한 증가하고 있는데, 오랫동안 방치되고 있는 빈 건물들의 증가는 이 거리의 풍경에 극명한 대조를 야기한다. 이러한 변화를 통해 이 거리가 건물의 다공성이 아닌 폐쇄성을 필요로 하는 공간임을 알 수 있는데, 건물의폐쇄성은 거리에서의 소비훈련에 기여하고 있다. 결국 이러한 꼬치시의 거리풍경은 공산당의 민중교육과 노조활동이 활발하게 전개되었던 지역으로까지 전파되고 있는 소비사회의막강한 힘을 보여준다.
