This paper investigates the origin and legitimacy of the tradition to characterize Heraclitus as “obscure.” This tradition was born from the unhealthy dichotomy which considers a discourse as good only when it conveys clear thoughts with simple medium. However, the discontinuity and the fragmentary style of the aphorism revealed in his surviving fragments are never a casual output produced by the distortion they suffer in the stage of their transmission. Rather, they are intended results from the author`s active reflection and deliberate choice of discourse form and medium; especially, they are byproducts of the ambitious attempt to intactly embody in hisown discourse the ``intended ambiguity,`` which was the Zeitgeist of the second-phase philosophers. It was the purpose and spirit of his discourse and meta-discourse to reveal the world as it is by sign, which naturally required the sort of discourse form and medium that can preserve the ambiguity and tension of discourse at most. In order to achieve the abundance of talk that is open towards multiple interpretation, to leave a blank space for readers to fill, and to establish the tradition of making and raising talks together, he chose writing rather than speaking, and prose rather than poem, and came to produce a discourse with various styles that had a large portion of discontinuous gnome or aphorism but also included a small portion of continuous argumentative prose. Such choice and attempt of his formed a part of the epistemological turn and meta-discursive reflection which were specific features of the second-phase philosophers, and demonstrate that his discourse, after rigid scrutiny on contemporary tradition of discourse, actively accepted and tried to improve the gnomic tradition of the seven sages and the prose tradition of Ionian philosophers.
