The advance of digital mastering has intensified the loudness war among music producers. In this study, in order to empirically understand the loudness war of K-Pop dance music, a total of 300 dance songs, the top 10 from 1992 to 2021, were selected from the Melon annual chart, and the RMS level and frequency bands level changes were analyzed. As results of the analysis, the loudness of K-pop dance music has steadily increased since 1992, especially from the 1990s to the 2000s, and the loudness level was little different from the current loudness in the mid-2000s. However, in the 2000s, relatively small loudness songs were existed in top chart, but since the 2010s, the deviation of loudness was not large. In addition, at the level of each frequency band, the low-band 0Hz-125Hz section steadily increased, while the mid- to low-band 125Hz-500Hz section steadily decreased.
Through this, it could be seen that the increase in low-band loudness was the highest in dance music. This change is judged to be due to changes in genre trends by era and the development of digital plug-ins, along with the preference of large loudness by K-Pop dance music music producers even after the 2000s, when criticism and reflection on loudness war were steadily raised.
