      The purpose of this study was to compare post-exercise cardiac autonomic responses immediately following acute bouts of eccentric (Ecc) and Concentric (Con) exercise at 80% of mode-specific maximal muscle contraction. Twenty apparently healthy men participated in this study. On two separate and randomized days, each participant performed 3 set of 10 repetitions at 80% peak root mean square (RMS) value on Ecc and Con. Electrocardiogram data were collected during 5 min periods in the sitting position, at rest and following each exercise bout. Measures of heart rate variability (HRV), obtained from both time and frequency domain analysis of 5min ECG recording were as follows: mean RR interval and its standard deviation (SDNN), the mean square successive differences (RMSSD), the low and high frequency components which were calculated as normalized units. Analysis of HRV revealed a significant increase in sympathetic activity and a significant decrease in parasympathetic activity following each resistance exercises. In comparison of the modalities, Ecc resulted in significantly greater changes of HFnu and LFnu indices than Con. These findings suggest that following resistance exercise at 80% of mode-specific intensity, Ecc is associated with a greater change in cardiac autonomic control than Con in healthy men.
