After studying the social and cultural significance of various vocabularies (words, expressions and terminology) in use in Taiwan and in Hong Kong, which have been incorporated into modern Chinese, the following can be concluded: the adaptation of vocabularies in use in Taiwan and Hong Kong into modern Chinese has spread to many areas (or subject matters) such as politics, economics, financing, commerce, science and technology, transportation, food, education, culture, entertainment, marriage, and formal or informal titles or designations.
The social and cultural meaning of these vocabularies reflects the changes on Chinese society from a closed socialist economic system to a more open market economy, following reforms introduced to open Chinese society to world markets, the changes on the social structure and the Chinese's desire for material well-being; the changes in Chinese aesthetic taste and fashion; the impact on China made by more advanced western science and technology.
