American Naturalist Elements in McTeague and Maggie: A Girl of the Streets

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 미국자연주의의 대표작가로 인정받는 프랭크 노리스와 스티븐 크레인의 두 소설 『맥티그』와 『매기: 거리의 여자』를 비교분석 하였다. 자연주의는 사실주의 문학 경향의 한 분파로서 서구에서 시작되어 19세기 말과 20세기 전반부에 미국에서 다양한 작가들에게서 두드러지게 나타난 문학사조의 하나이다. 자연주의는 사실주의와는 다른 몇 가지 특징을 보여주는데 환경, 결정론, 운명, 유전 등이 어떻게 인간의 삶을 결정하는가 등에 관심을 갖는다. 본 논문은 미국이 산업사회로의 사회적 변화를 거치면서 이 시기에 쓰여졌던 두 소설의 자연주의 경향의 요소가 어떻게 다른지 그리고 작가의 삶에 대한 철학적 태도의 차이로 이 요소들이 어떤 방식으로 소설에 재현되는가를 비교하며 분석한다. 두 소설은 인간의 유전적 요소가 어떤 방식으로 환경에 영향을 받을 때 한 인간을 얼마나 빠르게 파괴하는지 그리고 회복이 불가능한 상태로 몰아가 죽음을 택하게 되는가를 추적한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzes the two well-known American naturalist novels, Frank Norris’s McTeague and Stephen Crane’s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by comparing the characteristic elements of naturalism. Naturalism as a branch of Realism started in the Continent but became a major literary trend at the turn of the 20th century in America. Unlike Realism, Naturalism shows several different characteristics such as environment, determinism, fate, heredity and generally explores how these elements contribute to destroying the lives of human being. The study examines how these naturalistic elements of the two novels written during the era when the societal change during the transition from an agrarian to an industrial society in America was very conspicuous are represented in the novels. The two novels demonstrate how quickly human beings are destroyed and driven to death when one’s hereditary element is doubly combined with the horrible environment, thereby influencing the condition of one’s life.
