화이트헤드의 과정철학에서 존재와 지각 = Being and Perception in Whitehead's Process Philosophy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

과정철학은 고대로부터 시작된 형이상학적 사변의 주요 주제가운데 하나였다. 그것은 존재에 대해서 생성으로, 그리고 영속성에 대해서 변화를 형이상학적 대안으로 제시하여 왔다. 화이트헤드의 과정철학은 존재와 영속성에 대해 생성과 변화를 동등한 지위로 다루었다. "나와 함께 하소서. 때 저물어 날 이미 어두우니"라는 성가에서 앞 절은 영속성을, 뒷절은 변화를 나타낸다. 이것은 변화 속에 영속하는 것이, 영속하는 것 속에 변화로 이행하는 요소가 있다는 것이다.
화이트헤드는 존재의 본질을 구명하는 존재론을 모든 존재의 존재 근거인 현실적 존재자를 통해서 해명하고자 하였고, 그것이 그의 철학적 궁극 문제였다. 현실적 존재자의 본질은 과정이며 현실적 존재자는 과정 속에서 존재하게 된다. 그것은 존재를 구성하는 작용이며 기능이다. 이 작용은 확정적인 형상을 갖는다. 확정성의 형상은 현실적 존재자의 구성요소로서 존재하며, 이것이 영원한 대상이다. 현실적 존재자는 과정적이며 변화하는 것이지만 그 변화 속에는 영속성이 내재한다. 영속적인 소멸을 하는 존재는 화이트헤드 용어로 현실적 존재자이고 대상적 불멸성, 즉 영속성을 지닌 존재는 영원한 대상이다.
화이트헤드는 지각의 존재론적 기반을 현실적 존재자의 해석에 두고 있다. 인과적 효과성의 양태는 현실적 존재자의 과거의 현실 세계에 관한 자료를 제공한다. 이 양태에서의 지각대상은 모호하고 정서로 가득하다. 그 반면에 현재 세계의 자료를 산출하는 제시적 직접성의 양태에서의 지각대상은 간결하고 생생하다. 두 지각 양태간의 상징적 관련성은 상이한 자료를 제공하지만 그것들은 공통적인 요소를 갖는다. 이렇게 혼합된 양태가 상징적 관련성이다. 상징적 관련성의 결과, 현실 세계는 우리에 대해서 있는 그대로의 세계가 된다. 인간의 경험이 문제될 때 지각은 거의 언제나 상징적 관련성의 혼합된 양태의 지각을 의미한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Process philosophy is a kind of answer to the being vs. becoming, permanence vs. change. It has been one of central themes since the time of Greeks. The process philosophy of A. N. Witehead does not opt for the Heraclitean one. It asserts that being and becoming, permanence and change must claim coequal footing in metaphysical interpretation of the real.
Whitehead's compete fact is that it can be understood in terms of fundamental notions of the essence of being. In this light, the fundamental notion of Whitehead's Metaphysics is to investigate the essence of complete being. Actual entities are the ground for all other entities in Whitehead's philosophy. 'Actual entities' are said to be the real things of which the world is made. One of the remarkable peculiarities of actual entities is process. The process is the becoming' of actual entities. It means that these processes of becoming are a certain function of effecting the transition. This function is forms of definiteness, is what is called eternal object. Eternal object ingresses into the actual entity, determining the latter's definiteness. In this sense, actual entity and eternal object are two contrasting species of entity. The perishing of actual entity is the attainment of objective immortality.
The most primitive form of awareness for Whitehed is not the vivid display of environment normally termed sense perception, but the vague feeling of causal presences which he terms perception in the mode of causal efficacy. The mode of presentational immediacy is difficult to isolate in pure state, for, with exception of certain instances of illusion, it never exists its purity but always as integrated with the causal mode. The interplay between the two modes of perception-causal efficacy and presentational immediacy is termed symbolic reference. Such symbolic reference is so habitual in human experience that great care is required to distinguish the two modes.
