      Monk Hyechul and the Foundation of the Dongrisan School in the Late Shilla

      Dongrisan School, which was founded by Monk Hyechul and one of the nine Zen Buddhist schools in the late Shilla, still remains in existence today. Hyechul's family started to dwindle in the generation of his grandfather and thus moved into the province from the central area of Shilla. Realizing his status limitation early, he was rather concerned about Buddhism than Confucianism and Taoism, and entered the Buddhist priesthood at the Temple Buseok in 15th century. After completing his study there, he went to China to study.
      Upon his arrival, he received Dharma from Zen priest Jijang. He studied Garland Flower for 3 years at Temple Busa and then returned to the Shilla. Staying at Temple Sangbong, he searched for where he would stay for the rest of his life and decided Temple Dae-an for his Buddhist activities. King Munsung noticed and asked him for advice on the political situation at that time. His reply contained his opinion about the disturbance of Jang Pogo and the political atmosphere of Mujinju area.
      He entered into Nirvana in the first year of the King Kyongmun and his monument was built during the reign of King Kyongmun, which implies the close relationship between Dongrisan School the Court. We need to take into consideration the fact that the Court's support was as one major factor of the School's expansion.
