조선 전기 왕실 제례용 백자향로의 제작과 사용

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 왕실 제례용 백자향로에 관한 단독연구로써, 유교식 향로 등장의 출발점인 조선 전기를 기준해 백자향로의 제작배경과 특징을 살펴보았다. 유교의례 내 향과 분향의식이 중요하게 인지됨에 따라 향로 또한 중요성이 부각되었다. 제례용 백자향로는 1420~40년으로 상정되는 번천리 21호 요지를 기점하여 등장하였고, 이는 초기 제례용 금속향로의 원형을 추정할 수 있는 단서를 제공한다. 시대에 따른 선택적 조형양식 수용과 분향방식의 차이로 유개정(有蓋鼎)을 차용하였고, 유교식 의례에 걸맞는 향로를 마련하고자 한 의지에서 나타난 결과로 여겨진다. 기록을 살펴본 결과 흙의 질박함을 표현하는 제기, 꾸밈새가 없는 소기(素器)의 역할을 하였으며, 이는 제례용 백자향로 제작에 중요한 동인으로 작용했을 것으로 여겨진다. 주목되는 점은 조선 전기의 양식과 사용양상은 조선 중·후기를 거치면서도 지속적으로 영향을 주고 있었다는 점이다. 따라서 조선 전기 왕실 제례용 백자향로를 통해 기물과 용도에 따른 재질 분류가 선행적으로 이루어졌고, 단순히 금속기명을 번안하고 대체하는 것 이상으로 독립적인 성격이 있었음을 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study focuses on white porcelain incense burners used for royal ancestral rites in Chosŏn. Starting from early examples of Confucian incense burners, I have examined their production process and characteristics. As incense burning was an essential part of Confucian rites, incense burners also became important vessels. The earliest examples are found at Pŏnch’ŏn-ri site No. 21, dated to 1420-40, and they likely resemble the prototypes of ceremonial incense burners made of metal. Incense burners were influenced by the changes in the Chosŏn society and incense burning methods, and they took the shape of ding with cover. This testifies to the effort made to prepare suitable burners for Confucian rituals. Surviving records state that incense burners were to convey the simple and rustic beauty of the earth, and to work as simple so-gi, which were likely the reasons for making incense burners in white porcelain. It is also noteworthy that early Chosŏn style and uses continued to influence those of the mid-and late Chosŏn. In conclusion, the material of white porcelain and the shape of incense burners were chosen according to their uses, and they developed independently of metalware, not as mere substitutes.
