The purpose of this study is to examine effects of mothers’ emotional expression and reaction on preschool children’s emotional regulation. Subjects of this study were 463 children (229 boys and 234 girls) aged three to five years attending kindergartens located in Umsung-gun and Cheongwon- gun. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach’s α, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient using SPSS 12.0, and path analysis was done using AMOS 7.0. The findings of this study showed that the mothers’ discouraging and encouraging emotional response had a direct effect on the children’s maladaptive emotional regulation. The higher the mothers’ discouraging emotional response, the higher the children’s maladaptive emotional regulation whereas the higher the mother’s encouraging emotional response, the lower the children’s maladaptive emotional regulation. Second, the mothers’ encouraging emotional response had a direct effect on the children’s adaptive emotional regulation. The higher the mother’s encouraging emotional response, the higher the children’s adaptive emotional regulation. Third, the mothers’ positive emotional expression, negative emotional expression, and dissimulated emotion directly influenced their discouraging and encouraging emotional response. The mothers’ discouraging response decreased and their encouraging responses increased when they expressed highly positive emotion. Also, higher levels of negative emotional expression and dissimulated emotion led to higher levels of discouraging response and lower levels encouraging response. Fourth, the mother’s discouraging and encouraging emotional responses mediated their positive, negative, and dissimulated emotion, indirectly affecting the children’s maladaptive emotional regulation. However, only encouraging emotional response of the mothers mediated their positive, negative, and dissimulated emotion, indirectly affecting the children’s adaptive emotional regulation. In conclusion, the mothers’ discouraging emotional response had the greatest effect on the children’s maladaptive emotional regulation whereas the mothers’ encouraging emotional response had the biggest effect on the children’s adaptive emotional regulation.
