On the surface, Sherwood Anderson deals with Belle Carpenter`s story in “An Awakening.” But he actually focuses on George Willard`s self-realization to gain a new awakening. George accepts Winesburg society`s views on gender roles, particularly masculine power in the pool room. Seeing stars in the dark sky, he searches for the necessity of law and order and experiences an epiphany that makes his inner self grow. However, his awakening is not universal, but closely connected to masculine power. To prove his new-found manhood, he expresses his growth and sexual desire with big, brave words without meaning. But his action shows the limitation of a male-dominated society. He is humiliated by inarticulate Ed and then realizes that the self-realization he felt in the dark alley is an empty, false epiphany. In this sense, Belle and Ed`s relationship plays a role in illuminating the fact that George`s epiphany is a self-centered and romantic illusion, and that he cannot transcend the squalor of Winesburg. Anderson seizes and artistically expresses a moment of self-realization, though negative, in the process of George`s growth.
