웨슬리안 구원론― 기독자의 완전 교리의 함의 = Wesleyan Soteriology: Implications in the Doctrine of Christian Perfection

The contemporary Wesleyan tradition has abstained from dealing with the discourse on Christian perfection due to not only misunderstandings caused by the term ‘perfection’ itself and the complicated theological nuance in the doctrine of Christian perfection. It, however, is certain that the doctrine of Christian perfection was one of the main themes in Wesley’s theological trajectory. Thus William J. Abraham asserts that the doctrine of Christian perfection should be explored for contemporary Wesleyans for the purpose of precipitating ascetic or systematic theology.
I call your attention to the fact that Wesley delineated his views on Christian perfection in a close connection with the idea of holiness, explained in the Sermon “The Circumcision of the Heart.” Wesley described the idea of holiness in the following three points: restoration of the image of God, cure from corruption and sin as disease, and imitation of Christ’s virtues. Therefore, this study explores and analyzes the Wesleyan doctrine of Christian perfection in terms of the above-mentioned three categories. Then, I will clarify what implications in the Wesleyan doctrine of Christian perfection are illuminating for contemporary Wesleyans who live in the matrix of modern materialism and extreme individualism.

현대에 들어와서 웨슬리안 전통들에서도 기독자의 완전교리를 다루는 것을 꺼리는 경향이 발생했다. 그것은 아마도 ‘완전’이라는 용어에서 기인한 오해들과 기독자의 완전 교리가 가지고 있는 복잡한 신학적 뉘앙스 때문일 것이다. 그러나 기독자의 완전교리는 웨슬리의 일생의 신학적 작업 중에 변함없이 강조했던 신학 주제였다. 또한 윌리엄 에브라함과 같은 학자는 현대 웨슬리안들을 위해 기독자의 완전교리를 재해석해서 제공해야 한다고 주장한다. 그리고 이 작업을 위해 조직신학 혹은 수덕신학의 관점들의 도움을 받을 것을 제안한다.
여기서 주목할 사항이 하나가 있다. 웨슬리가 주장한 기독자 완전교리는 “마음의 할례” 설교에서 설명한 ‘성결’ 개념과 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. 그는 ‘성결’ 개념을 하나님 형상의 혁신, ‘병’으로서의 죄와 타락성의 치유, 그리스도의 덕을 닮음이라는 세 요점으로 묘사한다. 따라서 이 연구는 웨슬리안 관점의 기독자의 완전 교리를 위에서 언급한 세 가지 범주에서 살펴보고 분석할 것이다. 그리고 근대 물질주의와 극단적 개인주의가 지배하는 시대를 살고 있는 현대 웨슬리안들을 위해 기독자의 완전교리가 가지고 있는 함의들이 무엇이 있는지를 밝힐 것이다.
