      Summary
      As one of the ways m which the teacher of English can help students improve
      their lexical competence the fol1owing suggestions are offered for the teacher.First, the teacher makes use of "expression patterns" for meanings of lexical
      items. The expression pattern looks like this: "(Person) be (Number) (Year) old" for the
      sentence She is eleven years old. For "Person" comes any noun phrase denoting
      a human being.The item "be" is realized as is, was, etc., according to the context. For
      "Number"comes any cardoinal number. For "Years" comes either year or years. The
      order of items before andafter the expression pattern is as follows: first, a concept and
      its particular meaning forthe sentence, both m Korean, and then the expression pattern,
      and finally, examplesentences including the expression pattern.

      Second, the teacher makes use of "semantic fields" in order to classify the
      expression patterns students have learned. The criterion elnployed in this article for the
      classificationis the everyday life of a student. m the first place for the classification
      comes "TheBody. " And then "Food, C1othing, and Shelter," the three elements of a
      human life Next, "Subjects" learned at secondary schoo1, as history, society, science,
      music, etc. And finally, "Other Terms" to include all the other terms not mcluded in the
      above fields.
