구병모 소설의 환상 공간과 새로운 성장 - 『위저드 베이커리』와 『방주로 오세요』를 중심으로 = Fantasy Space and New Growth in Koo Byung-mo's Novels - Focusing on 'Wizard Bakery' and 'Come to the Ark'

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 구병모의 『위저드 베이커리』와 『방주로 오세요』를 중심으로 청소년소설에서 보편적으로 추구하는 가치인 ‘성장’이라는 주제가 환상 공간에서 어떻게 발현되는지 밝히고, 구병모가 제시하는 새로운 성장 문법을 찾는 것을 목적으로 한다.
구병모는 2000년대 중후반 이후 대표적인 청소년 소설가로 청소년소설을 대중화시키는데 견인차 구실을 해온 소설가다. 구병모의 텍스트는 신화와 동화를 작품 속에 녹여내고, 전문적 지식을 바탕으로 이야기의 구성이 밀도 있게 조직되었다고 평가받는다. 특히 대표적 청소년소설인 『위저드 베이커리』와 『방주로 오세요』는 환상 공간을 도입한 성장 서사라는 공통점이 있다. 구병모가 구현한 환상세계는 위로와 치유의 공간이기도 하고, 현실보다 가혹한 불평등과 위계의 공간이기도 하다. 또 환상세계는 현실과 유리된 곳이 아니며, 완벽한 세계가 아닌 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 환상소설 속 캐릭터는 종종 비범하거나, 신비로운 힘을 가진다. 그러나 구병모는 평범한 보통의 청소년 캐릭터를 설정하였고, 환상공간에서 만나는 조력자 역시 완벽하지 않다. 또 구병모는 성장에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하였다. 보편적인 성장이 결과 중심이었다면, 구병모는 과정 중심으로 해석했다. 실패를 경험하는 과정 자체가 ‘성장’이며, ‘선택의 결과’라고 주장하며 ‘주체성’을 성장의 중심에 두었다.
본 논문은 구병모 소설에 나타난 환상 공간의 도입과 주인공 성장과의 관계를 분석하고 청소년소설에서 보편적인 성장 서사의 도식이 ‘환상 공간’을 통해 어떤 새로운 성장 문법을 가지는지 살펴보았다. 또 지금까지 연구되지 않은 『방주로 오세요』를 『위저드 베이커리』와 함께 분석하여, 두 텍스트에서 구현한 환상 공간의 차별적인 지점을 찾아냈다는 데 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the theme of “growth,” a universal value in young adult literature, manifests in the fantasy spaces of Gu Byeong-mo’s The Wizard Bakery and Come to the Ark, and to identify the new framework of growth that Gu proposes. Since the mid-to-late 2000s, Gu Byeong-mo has been a prominent figure in young adult literature, significantly contributing to its popularization. Her works are praised for their integration of mythology and fairy tales, as well as their meticulously structured narratives grounded in professional expertise.
Both The Wizard Bakery and Come to the Ark, two of Gu’s most notable works, share a common theme as growth narratives set in fantasy worlds. The fantasy spaces Gu creates serve as realms of comfort and healing but also as spaces reflecting harsher inequalities and hierarchies than those of the real world. These spaces are neither disconnected from reality nor portrayed as perfect utopias.
While characters in fantasy literature often possess extraordinary or supernatural abilities, Gu breaks away from this convention by depicting ordinary adolescent protagonists. Even the mentors or helpers they encounter within these fantasy worlds are imperfect. Furthermore, Gu reinterprets the concept of growth. Traditional growth narratives tend to focus on the outcome, whereas Gu shifts the emphasis to the process. She asserts that experiencing failure is a crucial part of “growth” and interprets it as a “consequence of choice,” placing “individual agency” at the heart of the growth process.
This study analyzes the relationship between the introduction of fantasy spaces and the protagonists’ growth in Gu Byeong-mo’s novels. It examines how the conventional framework of growth narratives in young adult literature is redefined through the use of “fantasy spaces.” Additionally, the paper is significant in that it analyzes Come to the Ark, which has received little scholarly attention, alongside The Wizard Bakery, thereby identifying the distinctive characteristics of the fantasy spaces in both texts.
