      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

      Learning English as a foreign language is a means of acquistion not only of the linguistic features and knowledges, but also of a new culture. In addition, becoming bilingual is important in that it effects on a learner's way of life, especially, a way of expressing or communicating feeling or thought or idea in comparison with another cultural system. In this aspect, learning the practical use of English as one of the international languages becomes an instrument of understanding another culture other than the learner's culture, because a language is related inseparably with the social culture of the target language.
      This thesis is to study on an improvement scheme of communicative competence through culture education in teaching English at elementary school. This research goes on as follows:
      In chapter 2 followed by the preface, I present that culture teaching must be composed of illuminating the relation with communication ability and the culture of the target language.
      In chapter 3, I compare and analyze the culltural differences between South Korea and the United States of America, and then describe about the differences of language phenomena caused by the cultural differences.
      In chapter 4, I present various methods of culture education, and then in chapter 5, I diagnose some problems of teaching English by analyzing learner's and teacher's actual conditions. In this chapter I discuss about the improvement scheme. As an early analystic result, culture education was hardly made in the field of teaching English, and the congnition about necessity of culture education was not high. To improve this, the importance of culture education must be emphasized on teacher's research process, and in this point of view the guide book for English teachers must be consist of the systematic and detailed culture education guidance.
      In chapter 6, establish culture teaching plan apply English teaching-learning process consisting of culture education, and analyze the result. As the result, first, the effect of culture education is to improve learner's communication competence. Second, it brings some affirmative changes in behavior which students can understand and accommodate culture of the target language, and gives an opportunity which students can elevate interest about the culture.
      So I convince that culture education is important in that it makes sure that the learners of the target language can understand and communicate cosmopolitan and live together as family of global village, and it can make learners rear wholesome view of the world which can see the world wider to our children of the globalization age.
      Finally, I could that culture education is not optional but essential in teaching English, and I hope that culture education will be activated under the teacher's right comprehension in the field of eaching English, and the purposeful result of it will be achieved. In addition, I expect that constant research on culture education method will be developed and more systematic and effective culture education will be made.
