The purpose of this study was to examine the stress of kindergarten and nursing room teachers from the verbal expressions of the parents, and the reacting ways for such stress. In addition, it was to examine and explore the reacting methods for more desirable measures in interactions between stressed out teachers and parents, and to adopt appropriate methods to the actual education site.
The subjects of this study were total 21 teachers in 8 kindergarten and nursing rooms as children education institutions located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.
A site analysis method was used for this study, that was to directly participate in the actual education site, to collect and analyze the materials through interviews, and to interpret the meanings. A non-structural interview method was used for this study, that was to set issues and problems of which only the interviewer wished to hear from the interviewee, and to conduct interviews without predetermined concrete questions, procedures or interview methods.
This study was conducted between the 2nd of October and 18th of October, on 21 teachers of the kindergarten and nursing rooms, by the non-structural interview, on the parents verbal expressions causing stress to the teachers and the teachers reacting ways thereupon.
The interview dates and time were determined for teachers convenience, and twenty minutes to one hour was spent per teacher. For the material analysis, a researcher made transcription from the recorded tapes, materials made during the interviews were integrated with the transcriptions, preliminary criteria was determined, the materials were classified based on the criteria, and appropriateness of the classified materials was inspected repeatedly. The recording method of the interview with the teachers was to write down word by word in principle.
The results of the individual interviews with the teachers to explore the verbal expressions of parents causing stress were classified into four issues as follows: first, safety issue occurring in the institutions and responsibilities thereof, second, interference issue by the parents against the curriculum of the institutions, third, differences in opinions between teachers and parents on the behaviors of the children within the institutions, and fourth, impolite verbal and behavioral conducts of the parents against the teachers.
The reacting ways of the teachers against the stress were classified into the parent-centered reacting way and the teacher-centered reacting way.
The parent-centered reacting way included, first, explanation of situations, second, taking measures to solve problems, third, studying the insufficient points and area, fourth, admission of the mistakes and apology, and fifth, accepting the demands of the parents.
The teacher-centered reacting way included, first, abandon the conversations, second, endurance, third, attitude changes against the parents or children, fourth, seek consultations with the colleagues and predecessor teachers, and fifth, contemplation on ones teaching ability and take up on another occupation.
As a result of this study, kindergarten and nursing room teachers had enormous stress from the verbal expressions of the parents, and had reacting ways of their own.
This study was significant, for it inspected the stress caused by the verbal expressions of the parents on the kindergarten and nursing room teachers and it provided the frame for future research on various influences of the parents against the teachers, in a more specialized way.
Furthermore, the reacting ways against the stress were directly heard from the teachers themselves, hence enabling the basic material presentation for the desirable measures against the stress from the parents.
