The following extract is from the Boston Evening Transcript, of January 4, 1850--"A great number of deacons, I am aware, have died drunkards. I have considered the philosophy of this. In old times, a very large number of deacons were dramsellers. This happened, naturally enough. The law required, that 'men of sober lives and conversations' should be dramsellers, not because of the honor of the occupation, but because of the great peril to the customer.
