그림을 통해 본 가부장적 근대 유럽에서 활용한 여성 이미지의 이중성 = Dual Image of Women Used by the Patriarchal States in the Early Modern Europe

국문 초록 (Abstract)

근대 국가가 수용하는 진보와 변혁이 역사의 방향을 틀어가고 있을 때, 이 시기 여성의 이미지는 진보적인 근대의 특성과 걸맞지 않은 가부장적 시선 안에서 풍자와 차별의 대상으로 남겨졌다. 여성의 이미지는 근대성의 불완전한 모습의 반영이며 근대 정치사상의 역사 속에서 제외된 약자의 진실을 대변하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 근대화의 다양한 선전은 그럴듯한 외관과는 모순되게 고정관념을 벗어나지 않았다는 것을 인식할 때 근대성의 정치성을 완전히 파악할 수 있다. 이 논문의 문제의식은 하나는 그런 이해와 비판이 주로 여성성을 비사회적이고 비정치적인 성격으로 과장하는 것에 있다. 또 하나는 여성을 국가의 상징으로 만들어놓을 때 이는 살아있는 인간이 아니라 인위적이고 자연적이지 않은 신화적 존재로 과장한다는 것이다. 여성적인 국가는 아이를 보호하는 어머니 모습을 담고 있다. 이 논문은 첫째, 근대 서양 정치사상의 남성 중심적 가부장제의 토대를 소개한다. 둘째, 이 토대에 대한 도전을 소개한다. 셋째, 여성에 의해 사회적 통념이 무너지는 현장을 풍자하는 이미지를 통해 교회나 국가 권력의 훼방자로서의 여성의 이미지를 다룬다. 넷째, 앞의 부정적 이미지와는 언뜻 보기에 상반되는 인격화된 국가의 알레고리를 통해 가부장적 국가와 사상이 드러내는 이중성을 비판한다. 이렇게 하는 과정에서 자유주의가 합리화하는 근대성의 정체를 비판적으로 정리하고 정치사상의 사회적 역할의 확대를 요구한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores 1) the conflicting images of women shown in the political drawings and paintings in modern political thought, and 2) the meaning of those drawings and paintings as the tool of studying political thought. First, this paper challenges the prevailing belief that modern political thought began from Machiavelli has provided the essence of liberty and equality, the major concepts of liberalism. Patriarchal perception has been consistent in the core of liberal ideas though. The major goal of this paper is to review the images of women politically used in Europe from the 16th to the 19th centuries. By doing this, we can see the inconsistency of liberal nature of modern political thought in Europe. The drawings of Aristotle and Phyllis reveal the oppressive power over women conducted by the church and the state, and the image of the state personified women utilizes maternal nature. Whatever the intention of using these images, never changed is patriarchal treatment of women. Second, this paper shows political satires of modern Europe as the alternative of studying political history and political thoughts.
