Therapeutic acupuncture and moxibustion has baen used succesful!y in China for the management of pain for 4,000 to 5,000 years. A upuncture has also bn used for a long time to treat various conditions of pain in our country. Although acupuncture is not yet a widely accepteg medical procedure in the western world, a number of well documented experimental and clinical reports have indicated that analgesia can be produced by acupuncture stimulation technique.
Thirty-two patients recieved a total of 180 aeupuncture treatements including GDAP, REPP, Head, Auricle and Attachement of metal particles during a three month period in the Hanyang Medical Center. Upon completion of the acupuncture therapy, nineteen patients(59.4%) showed marked improvement. In terms of conditions treated, best results were obtained in patients with musculoskeletal disorders of the head, neck, shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle, back pain, and insommnia with heedache. Furthermore, there were no adverse effects except general fatigue in young and hypersensitive patients.
Thus, it is believed that further research in this area will improve the chance of understanding pain mechanisms and providing effective methods for pain control.
