아벨라르두스 윤리학의 ‘의도’ 개념 연구 = A Study on the concept of intention in Abelard's Ethics

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

One of the issues concerning the interpretation of Abelard's 'intention' is how
to reconcile the tension between the inner subjectivity and the absoluteness of
the moral laws. For example, how are the Jews to morally evaluate who prosecuted
Jesus in the conviction that their persecutions were pleasing God. In this article,
I analyze the layers of meaning in the concept of intention in Abelard and interpret
the position of Abelard in a strongly intellectualistic way. 'Intention' has (1) an
intellectual understanding of the goal, which an agent through his actions aims,
(2) as the second thought of the mind (cogitatio animi), against the first and
natural movement of the will, (3) the function of mediating the insight of the
goal and the individual will. According to Abelard the main reason of denying
the Jews the correctness of the intention is their intellectual failure, to understand
correctly what should be the goal of their actions. So Abelard's concept of intention
seems to assume an order or providence that lies outside the intentions, and
accordingly judges the rightness or wrongness of the intentions. This is a strong
support for the intellectualistic way of understanding the 'intention' in Abelard's
ethics.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아벨라르두스의 의도 개념 해석을 둘러싼 쟁점 중의 하나는 의도 개념이 강
조하는 내면적 주관성과 도덕적 자연법의 절대성 사이의 긴장을 어떻게 해
소할 것인가이다. 단적으로 예수를 박해한 유대인들의 경우처럼 자신들의 행
위가 신의 뜻에 맞는 것이라고 굳게 믿어 행위한 경우와 같이 순수한 의도
로부터 나왔지만 잘못된 양심에서 비롯한 잘못된 행위를 어떻게 평가할 것
인가의 문제이다. 필자는 이 논문에서 아벨라르두스 의도개념의 층위를 분석
하고 이 분석으로부터 아벨라르두스의 입장을 주지주의적인 것으로 해석한
다. 의도는 자신이 지향하는 목적에 대한 통찰에 의해 자신의 자연적이고
일차적인 의지를 매개하는 성격을 갖는다. 예수를 박해한 유대인의 경우에는
의지의 일차적 방향을 매개할 지적인 계기가 올바르지 않았기 때문에 순수
한 의도일 수 없다는 것이 아벨라르두스의 분석이다. 아벨라르두스의 ‘의도’
개념은 의도 바깥에서 의도의 옳고 그름을 판단하게 하는 질서 내지 섭리에 대한 믿음을 전제하고 있다고 봐야 할 것이며, 필자는 이것을 그의 의도 개
념이 갖는 상당히 강력한 주지주의적 색채로 평가한다
