The airborne EVM(Engine Vibration Monitoring) system uses piezo-electric transducers(accelerometers) to sense engine vibration. The charge signal generated by the accelerometers is then wired through special low-noise cabling to the EVMU. The signal processing is provided by the EVMU, which extracts the relevant information from the total vibration signal provided by the accelerometers. The area of interest in airborne engine vibration monitoring is relatively limited and confined to the once-per-revolution vibration (out-of-balance) of the engine shaft(N1 and N2). The reason for this limited monitoring is that experience has shown that for all modern turbofan engines, the monitoring of these vibration components is sufficient as a criterion to determine the safety margin in order to avoid a catastrophic engine failure. In other words, all engine failure modes that could lead to a catastrophic engine failure will first of all lead to an increase in out-of-balance vibration.
This primary goal of the this paper is to summarize the feasibility of detecting vibration abnormality on the commercial aircraft engine by means of the spectral analysis method. During the operation of turbofan engine, blade natural frequencies coupled with shaft torsional natural frequencies, which may then be measured. However, the problem is to determine whether how much vibration from an enigne is "normal" or it is real vibration. This can be determined through experience from operating a given engine type with spectral analysis. Through this study, the paper shows that the vibration estimation is an effective tool to obtain unbalance engine movement.
