전시연합대학이 미친 사회적·교육적 영향에 관한 시론적 고찰 = A Preliminary Study on the Socio-Educational Impact of the Wartime United University

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 전쟁의 강렬한 체험과 기억이 이를 겪은 사람들의 인식, 선택, 행동에 깊이 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 보고, 한국전쟁 시기에 설립된 전시연합대학이 한국 사회에 미친 사회적·교육적 영향을 시론적 수준에서 탐구하였다. 전시연합대학은 전시 상황에서 운영된 임시적 성격의 고등교육기관이었으나, 그 영향은 전시연합대학이 해체되고 전쟁이끝난 이후에도 지속되었다. 이 연구는 기존 연구물, 신문 기사, 개인의 일기 및 회고록, 대학사 등의 문헌을 바탕으로전시연합대학의 영향을 분석하였다. 전시연합대학이 미친 사회적·교육적 영향은 크게 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 전시연합대학은 지방 국립대학교의 설립을 촉진하였다. 이로써 고등교육 기회의 지역적 불균형 해소에 일조했으나, 고등교육기관의 급증으로 인한 대학교육의 질적 저하 문제도 초래되었다. 둘째, 전시연합대학은 대학교육에 대한국민적 열망을 고조시키는 계기가 되었다. 한국전쟁기와 전쟁 직후의 대학교육 열기는 전시 기간 중 대학 재학생들에게주어진 징집 보류 혜택에 기인하였다. 마지막으로, 전시연합대학은 대학교육에 대한 국가 통제를 강화하는 데 활용되었다.
전쟁이라는 특수한 상황은 대학교육에 대한 국가의 통제와 개입을 정당화했으며, 이는 전쟁 이후 분단국가 체제하에서도지속되었다. 이 연구는 전시연합대학이 한국 대학교육과 사회에 미친 지속적 영향을 고찰하며, 향후 연구의 출발점이될 것을 제안한다.

This study explores the socio-educational impact of the Wartime United University, established during the Korean War. This study is based on the premise that the intense experiences and memories of the war deeply influenced the perceptions, choices, and actions of those who experienced it. Although the Wartime United University was a temporary higher education institution operating under wartime conditions, its influence persisted even after its dissolution and the end of the war. This study analyzes the impact of the Wartime United University by utilizing existing research, newspaper articles, personal diaries and memoirs, and university histories. The socio-educational impacts of the Wartime United University can be summarized into three key areas. First, it facilitated the establishment of regional national universities, contributing to the mitigation of regional disparities in access to higher education. However, this also led to a decline in the quality of university education due to the rapid increase in higher education institutions. Second, the Wartime United University heightened public enthusiasm for university education. This surge in enthusiasm during and immediately after the Korean War stemmed from the conscription deferment benefits granted to university students during the war. Finally, the Wartime United University is closely linked to the strengthening of state control over higher education. The extraordinary circumstances of the war justified state intervention and control over higher education, a trend that persisted under the divided nation system after the war. This study highlights the lasting influence of the Wartime United University on Korean higher education and society, proposing it as a foundation for future research.
