In the present study, we examined the preventive effects of the E. ulmoides on bone lose in OVX rat. E. ulmoides was administrated orally, which started on the first week after bilaterial OVX surgery. BMD was determined using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
Our finding demonstrated that 8 week treatment with E. ulmoides significantly increased femur and lumbar vertebrae bone mineral density (BMD) and inhibited the increase in serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels compared to ovariectomized (OVX) control rats, without resulting in an increased uterus weight.
In conclusion, E. ulmoides is able to prevent OVX-induced in BMD without hyperplastic effect on uterus. E. ulmoides may be a reasonable natural alternative for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
