      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

WE scarcely know any subject at the present moment of more anxiously interesting importance, than the increasing progress of knowledge, and the right application of its resources. When we look at the actual state of the church of Christ; when we contemplate the extension of religious profession; when we recollect the currency which has been given to educational notions founded upon views derived solely from physical organization, rather than upon intellectual and spiritual attributes; when we estimate the consequences which have been drawn from such premises, and the degree of weight and influence they appear to throw into the scale of those who would undermine the moral accountability of man, and destroy his free agency; when we trace the progress of those cheerless opinions which would surround us with the night of sceptiticism; or when, on the contrary, we either witness the great activity of charitable feeling and the desire to extend the influence of religion, or observe the occasional hindrances which are thrown in the way of this extension by narrow-mindedness and well-meant intolerance; we deeply feel the importance of education grounded on sound principles--in order that religious profession may be grafted on truly scriptural views of the Law of God; that men may be early and constantly impressed with a sense of their spiritual duties, and of the necessity for employing all their talents to right purposes; that they may be convinced of their accountableness for their thoughts, words, and actions, to Him who judges the heart; that they may be imbued with such views of Divine truth as cannot be shaken by the insinuations of the sceptic; and that, when the present generation has passed away, there may be a succession of firm supporters to the cause of truth growing up with enlarged and enlightened minds, so as to secure at once a greater amount of practical Christianity, accompanied by the ornaments of extensive acquirement, polished manners, and refined feeling.
