SUS304, one of the representative low temperature stainless steels, is generally applied to cryogenic outfitting parts, valves and structure members for ship and offshore plant. Recently SUS304 is used in the structure member of LNG cargo hold and marine loading arm according to the extension of development of shale gas. In this paper, a fundamental study on elasto-plastic numerical analysis method is carried out to predict the material behavior of SUS304 focusing on strain hardening, strain rate hardening and failure. At first, theoretical backgrounds with respect to the strain hardening, the strain rate hardening and the failure are reviewed. Tensile test of SUS304 is carried out to applied to the elasto-plastic numerical analysis. In the elasto-plastic numerical analysis, general finite element analysis program, ABAQUS/EXPLICIT is used, and the material behavior results from the numerical analysis are compared to the test.
