  Without the hopes of admission to future sources of enjoyment, at the hour of dissolution we may assume an air of composure, because we are unable to resist, or an air of fortitude from the last efforts of pride; but, in point of fact, we can await the extinction of our being only with a mournful and melancholy gloom. This representation has frequently been realized in the case of men of cultivated minds, who had thrown aside the obligations of religion and the idea of a future world, when they approached the confines of the tomb; of which the following instances may suffice.
