‘나폴리탄 괴담’ 장르의 형성과 그 성격 = The Formation and Dynamics of the “Napolitan Stories” Genre

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 인터넷에서 이루어지는 이야기 향유의 한 단면을 검토하기 위해, 최근 한국 인터넷 이야기판에서 유행하고 있는 ‘나폴리탄 괴담’ 장르의 형성과 전개 과정을 시계열적으로 살핀다. 장르의 원전(原典)이 되는 이야기는 2004년경 일본 인터넷에서 발생해, 2009년경 한국 인터넷에 유입된다. 그 뒤 ‘모호함’에 근거한 공포감의 조성이라는 수법을 공유하는 이야기를 포괄하며, ‘나폴리탄 계열’이라는 범주를 구성한다. 다만‘나폴리탄 계열’에 포괄된 이야기가 당초 그 범주 자체와 무관하게 창작된 것임을 고려하면, 그 범주는 장르로서 활성화된 상태였다고 할 수 없다. 한편 미국 인터넷에서 발생한 규칙괴담의 형식은, 2010년대 중반을 경유하며 한국 인터넷에 유입되고, 2019년경에이르면 ‘나폴리탄 괴담’이라는 장르적 표지(標識)와 결합한다. 명확하고 구체적인 형식덕에, 규칙괴담의 형식을 취한 ‘나폴리탄 괴담’은 활발히 재생산되며, 장르로서 활성화된다. 그 결과 규칙괴담이 ‘나폴리탄 괴담’ 장르에서 대표성을 획득한다. 그러한 상황에 관해 규칙괴담이 장르 규범인 ‘모호함’을 훼손한다며 비판하는 향유자와, ‘모호함’의 규범을 규칙괴담 형식을 통해 구현하고자 하는 향유자 사이에 논쟁이 벌어지고 있다. 아울러‘나폴리탄 괴담’ 장르가 규칙괴담으로 이해됨에 따라, 기존에 ‘나폴리탄 계열’로 분류된이야기가 ‘나폴리탄 괴담’ 장르에서 다시 분화되는 양상도 확인된다. 그러한 논쟁, 합류, 분화의 양상은 모두 장르 범주가 지닌 운동성을 드러낸다.

This paper presents an empirical study on the formation, development, and dynamics of narrative genres, focusing on the “Napolitan Stories” actively enjoyed in Korean online communities. The genre, which originated by combining various elements found on the internet in Japan and the United States, is now commonly understood as a form of “Rules Horror” - a subgenre of horror fiction characterized by narratives that follow a prescribed set of rules. However, a closer examination of its history and conventions reveals that it is difficult to define the genre in such a limited way. As a result, ongoing debates among its enthusiasts regarding the genre's norms of “ambiguity” and definition continue to arise. Additionally, the incorporation of new elements and the merging and differentiation with adjacent genres further fuel these discussions. This pattern illustrates the dynamics inherent in genre labelling and categorization.
