This is intended to elucidate three features of export in Korea during 1955-1964; first, instability of primary export, second, high dependence of our export market upon two countries, third, backward and "pre-modern" situation in export sector.
In the first place, the table of "export instability degree" measured by the method of U.N. Secretariat as well as obsevations on the fluctuation in both export volume and price show how seriously unstable the export of principal primary goods has become during the period.
Furthermore, as for export market, almost two-thirds of the exports were sold to two countries, Japan and United States, annually in average. Besides, a large part of the newly widened market for manufactures shows being assisted by United States policy and controlled by the intermediation of Japanese trading companies.
Lastly, but not the least important is a feature of export sector. In the past, export trade was not directly linked to the production for export. An increase in export does not always induce development of export industry. Specifically, Korean products were able to sell abroad only by dumping. The loss of dumping, however, usually made up by import of luxury, semi-luxury and consumption goods through Korean governemtn export policy.
When we consider the instability in export trade, high dependence of the export market upon two countries and "pre-modern situation" in export sector during the period, Korean export trade and sector, regardless the increase in export, seem to remain backward as previous. From these considerations of three features of export, this paper concludes that export in Korea may provide only a weak stimulus to econmic development.
