자아 정체성과 집의 양가성 관계 연구 : 서도호의 ‘집’ 시리즈 작품에 대한 인본주의 심리학적 분석을 중심으로 = Exploring the Relationship between Self-Identity and the Ambivalence of Home: A Humanistic Psychological Analysis of Do Ho Suh’s ‘Home’ Series

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 칼 로저스의 인본주의 심리학을 기반으로, 집이 개인의 자아 정체성과 심리적 안정에 미치는 양가적 영향을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 로저스가 제시한 ‘가치의 조건’, ‘일치성’, ‘현상적 장’과 같은 핵심 개념은 개인이 자신의 경험을 어떻게 해석하고 통합하는지 보여주며, 이를 통해 집은 단순한 거주 공간을 넘어 사회·문화적 기대와 주관적 경험이 뒤섞이는 심리적 무대로 드러난다. 특히 서도호의 설치예술 작품 사례를 토대로, 집이 안정과 소속감을 제공하는 동시에 이주와 문화 충돌 같은 낯선 상황에서 갈등과 불일치를 야기할 수 있음이 확인되었다. 또한 집의 이동성과 경계 해체 과정을 통해, 개인의 정체성이 고정되지 않고 지속적으로 재구성됨을 시사한다. 결국 집은 내적 참조체계가 작용하는 복합적 공간으로, 자아 형성과정에서 긍정적 자원인 동시에 심리적 제약 요인이 되기도 한다. 본 연구는 현대 사회에서 집과 정체성의 관계를 재조명하고, 이주와 다문화 배경에서 자아 실현을 모색할 수 있는 실천적 통찰을 제공한다. 이를 통해 공간과 개인의 상호작용을 더욱 깊이 이해하고자 한다.

This study conducts an in-depth analysis, grounded in Carl Rogers’s humanistic psychology, of the ambivalent effects that the home exerts on an individual’s sense of self-identity and psychological stability. Rogers’s core concepts—“conditions of worth,” “congruence,” and the “phenomenal field”—illustrate how individuals interpret and integrate their experiences, thereby demonstrating that the home goes beyond serving as a mere dwelling to function as a psychological stage where social and cultural expectations intertwine with subjective experience. Through the example of Do Ho Suh’s installation art, the home is shown to foster security and belonging while also engendering conflict and incongruity in unfamiliar contexts such as migration and cultural clashes. Furthermore, the home’s mobility and the dismantling of its boundaries suggest that personal identity is not fixed but is instead continually reconstructed. Ultimately, the home emerges as a complex space shaped by the internal frame of reference, simultaneously acting as both a positive resource and a psychological constraint in the process of identity formation. By reexamining the relationship between home and identity in contemporary society, this study offers practical insights for exploring self-realization in the contexts of migration and multiculturalism, thus aiming to deepen our understanding of the dynamic interplay between space and individuals.
