This study examined trends in poetry therapy activities and research as presented in poetry therapy research papers in South Korea. To accomplish this, we searched the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) using the keyword “poetry therapy” and further filtered the results using humanities-related keywords. In total, 115 research articles were collected. Initially, we analyzed the data collected from 115 poetry therapy research papers to understand the overall trends in poetry therapy and research, categorized by year, academic journal, and dissertation type.
Additionally, we extracted scholarly journals and master's or doctoral dissertations that implemented poetry therapy programs for further analysis. We examined aspects such as therapeutic approaches, goals of poetry therapy, and methods of utilizing text, focusing on specific topics of discussion topics. Furthermore, we analyzed the general haracteristics of the poems used in the poetry therapy programs.
According to the research results, poetry therapy research papers have been consistently published since 2005. Over the years, studies on poetry therapy programs have targeted various subjects, including developmental stages, clinical therapeutic approaches, and theoretical studies. The goals of poetry therapy are primarily to emphasize mental health through psychological relaxation. Regarding the use of poetry, scholarly journals often adopted receptive and prescriptive methods, whereas dissertations commonly employed integrated approaches.
In analyzing the general characteristics of the selected poems, researchers used a variety of themes based on the goals of poetry therapy. The selection of poems in scholarly journals sometimes showed bias due to researchers' preferences, resulting in the same poem being used in multiple papers. In contrast, dissertations utilized a diverse range of poems, with most selected to align with preventive and developmental programs, reflecting their popularity among the general public.
There is a need for increased specialization in poem selection for poetry therapy to enhance the depth of clinical therapeutic approaches. Collaborative activities are also essential for the further advancement of poetry therapy.
