      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

      Purpose: The meaning of idioms cannot be fully comprehended by the meaning of its constituent parts, and refers to the linguistic unit of word complex with different meaning from the meaning of composed words functioning as one component in a sentence. Interest and research on idiom has been conducted continuously since 1970s because idiom acquisition of children is based on various characteristics and complexity including cognitive, linguistic, and pragmatic competence. Research on idiom acquisition is still being done, but majority of studies are on children with disabilities or from multicultural family and studies conducted on disadvantaged children from community child center are nonexistent. Therefore, this study intended to investigate understanding traits of idiom of children in community child center and suggest the necessity of idiom education for children in community child center. Methods: This study was conducted on children who live in Gangwon-do and use community child center. For investigation on understanding ability of idiom, this study classified idiom into 5 categories according to the transparency and familiarity, and composed into 2 task types as independent assignment and context assignment. Results: Understanding ability of idioms of children using community child center was low in every task variable of this study as task type, transparency, and familiarity. This signifies that children using community child center can have problems in meta-linguistic ability as idiom even if their basic language level is similar to other general children in the same age group. Conclusions: Evaluation on idiom and treatment for children in community child center are hardly being done at the moment in clinical settings. Therefore, clear evaluation on idiomatic language skills of children in community child center and intervention or treatment would be necessary by considering characteristics of children in community child center based on the research results.
