남명(南冥) 독서법(讀書法)의 유형과 의리학적 특징 = A Study on the Characteristics of Nammyeong`s Reading Methods and Their Status in History of Thoughts

국문 초록 (Abstract)

南冥은 조선 중기의 위대한 독서이론가이다. 독서인들이 下學도 하지 못하면서 上達부터 한다고 비판하면서, 독서법을 통해 실천궁행의 지침을 마련하고자 했다. 남명이 제시하는 독서법은 세 가지 유형으로 되어 있다. 자세를 언급한 독서법과 요령을 언급한 독서법과 목적을 언급한 독서법이 그것이다. ‘자세를 언급한 독서법’은 여섯 개로서 持敬에 바탕을 두었고, ‘요령을 언급한 독서법’은 네 개로서 活看에 바탕을 두었고, ‘목적을 언급한 독서법’은 네개로서 實得에 바탕을 두었다. 크게 보아, 지경과 활간과 실득은 수직적ㆍ단계적 관계를 형성한다. 즉, 1단계에서는 활간과 지경1이 호응하고 2단계에서는 실득과 지경2가 호응한다. 그 최종적인 지향점은 天理 體認이다. 남명 독서법은 自得之學이기 때문에 義理學的 側面이 강하다. ‘透見’과 ‘無邪’의 수양론적 성격과 ‘主宰’와 ‘命物’의 심학적 성격이 바로 의리학적 측면이다. 남명이 당대 독서 상황을 성찰하고 하학의 수양 체계’를 구축하다 보니, 의리학으로서의 독서법이 설정되었으리라 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Nammyeong[南冥] was a great reading theorist in middle Joseon. Criticizing that the readers of his times were not capable of doing Hahak[下學] and yet would start with Sangdal[上達], he tried to set a group of guidelines for Shilcheongunghaeng[實踐躬行] through reading methods. He presented total 14 reading methods. His six "reading methods mentioning an attitude" were based on Jigyeong[持敬], his four "reading methods mentioning know-how" were based on Hwalgan[活看], and his four "reading methods mentioning a purpose" were based on Shildeuk[實得]. In a big picture, Jigyeong[持敬], Hwalgan[活看], and Shildeuk[實得] are in phased relations. Hwalgan [活看] and Jigyeong[持敬]1 respond to each other in Phase1, and Shildeuk[實得] and Jigyeong[持敬]2 do in Phase2. The ultimate intention point is the Cheonri[天理] feeling. Nammyeong``s reading methods are Jadeukjihak[自得之學] and thus have a strong aspect of Uirihak[義理學], which involves the self-cultivation nature of Tugyeon[透見] and Musa[無邪] and the practical ethics nature of Jujae[主宰] and Myeongmul[命物]. He reflected on reading situations and established a self-cultivation system of Hahak[下學] as analternative, thus setting his reading methods as Uirihak[義理學].
