카를로 스카르파의 전시공간 디자인 특성에 관한 연구

이탈리아의 지역주의 건축가로 알려진 카를로 스카르파(Carlo Scarpa)는 건축가로서의 명성보다는 자신의 디자인적 표현의 완성도를 높이는데 집중한 건축가이다. 이탈리아의 디자이너는 건축, 가구, 조형 등으로 세분화된 것이 아닌, 종합적으로 모든 분야를 넘나드는 토탈 디자이너이다. 스카르파 또한 그의 모든 작품에 있어 외부와 내부, 조형, 조경 등 모든 곳에 그의 손길이 닿아 있으며, 그것들의 조화는 하나의 예술작품으로 인식된다.

카를로 스카르파는 활동시기보다는 사후에 더욱 인정을 받고 있다. 당시 세계전쟁 이후 재건을 위한 빠른 공정과 규모에 대한 요구는 그에게 부합되지 않아 오랜 침체기를 보내었다. 이후 유리공예에 대한 심취와 여러 분야 작가들의 전시공간계획을 진행하며 자신만의 디자인 철학을 완성하게 되었다. 또한 프랭크 로이드 라이트(Frank Lloyd Wright)를 알고 감명 받아 미국을 여행하게 되고, 일본 문화에 대한 관심은 두 번의 여행으로 이어졌다.

따라서 본 연구의 목적은 카를로 스카르파가 가지는 디자인 철학을 바탕으로 실내디자인적 측면에서 전시공간의 디자인 특성을 도출하고 종합하여 그의 디자인 방법론을 알아보는 것이다. 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다.

첫 번째, 베네치아의 도시적 맥락의 이해를 통한 중력에 반하는 부유성이 표현되었다. 주로 계단에서 확인된다.
두 번째, 장인적 기술과 정확한 물성의 이해를 바탕으로 설비와 계단, 기둥, 개구부 등을 이용한 오브제성이 표현되었다. 또한 그가 영향 받은 다양한 작가들의 언어가 엿보인다.
세 번째, 벽과 바닥, 천장의 패턴을 통해 공간에 리듬감을 부여하며 전시공간이 방향성과 인지성을 가지게 하였다.
네 번째, 빛을 효율적으로 받아들이기 위해 모서리창과 천창을 사용하였으며, 유입된 자연광은 방향성과 시간성을 가진다.
다섯 번째, 정확한 물성의 이해를 바탕으로 한 차이를 강조하기 위한 디테일의 분리와 분절이 나타난다. 이질적 재료들 또는 분리를 통한 보이드(Void)를 이용하여 하나의 면 또는 하나의 오브제로 보이게 하였다.
여섯 번째, 매스의 강조를 위한 금속 프레임은 일종의 재료적 경계로 작용된다.

이러한 연구의 결과로 공간을 이루는 모든 것에 정성을 기울인 장인 정신과 그로부터 나타나는 디테일과 마감이 실내디자인을 하는 사람들과 하고자 하는 사람들에게 좋은 귀감이 되기를 기대한다.

ABSTRACT
Study on Design Characteristics of Carlo Scarpa's Exhibition Spaces

Carlo Scarpa known as an Italian regionalist architect focused on enhancing the integrity of his design expression, rather than his reputation as an architect. The Italian designers are not are divided into those engaging in architecture, furniture and sculpture, but are the total designers who can comprehensively deal with all fields. All of Scafpa’s works, including interior, exterior, sculptures and landscapes are also touched by his hands, and the combination of them is recognized as an art work.

Carlo Scarpa has been more highly valued after death, than during the time of activity. He spent a long downturn, as demands for fast process and large scale, for the reconstruction after World War did not match with his tendency. Then, he completed his own design philosophy, as he was devoted in glassblowing and made plans for exhibition spaces of authors from many fields. In addition, he traveled to U.S.A, after he was aware of and impressed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and his interest in the Japanese culture led to two trips to Japan.

The purpose of this study, therefore, is to examine his design methodology, by drawing and comprehensively considering the design characteristics of exhibition spaces in terms of interior design, based on his design philosophy. The findings are as follows:

First, floating acting against gravitation was expressed through understanding of the urban context of Venezia, and is often verified on steps.
Second, object characteristics were expressed by using equipment, steps, pillars and openings, based on artisan skills and exact understanding of properties of matter. In addition, the languages of various authors who influenced him are glanced at.
Third, exhibition spaces were made to have orientation and cognitiveness, by applying rhythmic sense to the spaces through patterns of walls, bottoms and ceiling.
Fourth, corner windows and cloth windows were used to effectively receive light, and introduced natural light has orientation and temporality.
Fifth, separation and segmentation of details for stressing difference occurs based on exact understanding of properties of matter. One plane or one object were shown by using heterogeneous materials or Void through separation.
Sixth, metal frames for stressing a scalpel acts as a kind of material boundaries.

The craftsmanship of masters who devoted themselves in all things constituting spaces and details and finishing, derived from it are expected to be desirable models for people engaging in interior design and candidates.
