Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to show the functional
characteristics of English passives. Since Chomsky's Grammar(1965) ,
the English passives have mainly been explainEd or analyzed on the
basis of syntatic structure of English sentences.
But the syntactic analyses such as Chomsky's and his follower's
analysis have been filced wi th many problems, which cannot be solved
by syntactic factors.In this Paper, we suggested the semantic welformedness condition
based on the functiortal sentence perspectives in order to solve the
problems faced in purely syntactic analyses.This semantic welformedness condition along with the functional
sentence perspectives can explain the syntactic and semantic
characteristics of English passives as well as those of the use of
English passives.
Therefore, we carl conclude the passive sentences need to be
analyzed and explained on the basis of functional factors.
