L1 Influence on L2 Speech Perception of Korean Stops by Mongolian Learners of Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose of this article is to investigate how Mongolian speakers perceive non-native Korean stops. Both Korean and Mongolian have the feature [spread] in common that distinguishes between aspirated and lax stops. With regard to L2 speech perception, it is predicted that the existence of the feature [spread] in L1 grammar will facilitate Mongolian speakers’ ability to discriminate Korean lax stops from aspirated stops. Contrary to the prediction is that Mongolian speakers failed to perceive this contrast in the AX Discrimination task, which implies that L1 phonology does not play a role in perceiving non-native contrasts. Instead, a phonetic property (VOT) is a crucial perceptual cue that accounts for the experimental results.
