Simon Chan’s Liturgical Response to Worship Renewal

국문 초록 (Abstract)

예배 갱신운동은 현대문화를 긍정적이고 적극적으로 수용하면서 예배의 문화화를 촉진시켰다. 하지만 최근에 문화의 수용에 대한 새로운 신학적 고찰이 이루어지고, 전통과 초대교회의 여러 유산에 대한 복원이 다시 강조되고 있다. 예배 갱신은 다시 문화에 대한 비평적 거리두기와 전통의 회복을 통한 균형을 마련하기 위해 새로운 노력을 하고 있다. 이러한 예배 갱신 운동에서 개신교 진영 내에 기독교 예배의 신학적 예전적 고찰을 제시한 사이몬 첸(Simon Chan)을 주목하고 해석하는 일은 중요하다. 이 글은 첸이 성경적, 역사적, 신학적 고찰을 통해서 구축한 개신교 예배 신학에 대한 이해와 해석 그리고 예전적 기여와 과제를 고찰한다. 첸은 자신의 교회론에 근거해서 기독교 예배 신학을 정립한다. 특히 그는 기독교 예배가 그리스도의 이름으로 모이는 공동체의 본질을 구성하고, 규명하고, 제시하는 핵심 실천임을 역사적, 신학적 고찰을 통해서 선명하게 제시한다. 그에 따르면, 말씀과 성찬은 성령의 도우심을 따라 그리스도의 임재에 확실하게 참여하는 방식일 뿐만 아니라 교회를 구성하는 핵심 구조와 구성내용이기도 하다. 초대교회의 실천과 교회론에 근거해서 구축한 첸의 예배신학은 말씀과 성찬의 구조와 전통적 예배 실천 요소들(입문자 훈련과정, 십계명, 주기도 등)의 회복을 위한 당위적 필요를 제시하는데 크게 기여를 하고 있다. 하지만, 기독교 예배는 이미 현대 문화적 상황 속에서 다양한 방식들로 예배를 실천하고 있기 때문에, 단지 예배의 이상적 비전을 제시하는 것으로는 실천의 전환과 회복을 이끄는데 한계를 지닌다. 신앙의 고백이 실천으로 어떻게 주어지고, 이 둘 사이의 관계가 어떻게 형성되는지를 규명하는 것은 예배 신학의 오랜 주제이자 핵심 과제이다. 이러한 구체적인 예배 신학의 과제를 세부적으로 다루지 않을 경우 첸의 제안은 예배를 위한 하나의 비전 제시로 남게 된다. 첸의 예배 신학을 통해 남겨진 과제는 현대교회 예배의 실천이 전통에서 얼마나 간격을 갖고 있는지 그리고 예배의 이해가 실천으로 이어지기 위해서 어떤 노력을 해야 하는지를 지속적으로 고찰하는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The movement of worship renewal has been promoting cultural accommodation. Yet, this positive acceptance of culture has been challenged by the groups attempting to retrieve the legacies from the tradition of early churches. Having the position of criticizing positive cultural accommodation, Simon Chan responded to the movement of worship renewal. This article explores Chan’s liturgical theology by interpreting the meanings and contributions of his concepts and ideas of worship for the Protestant churches. Chan established a liturgical theology based on ecclesiology; Christian worship could be the embodiment of church by identifying the nature of the gathered congregation. The Word and sacrament are at the core of composing the liturgy of church by leading the worshipers to engage in the presence of the Christ with the help of the Holy Spirit. By tracing back to the structure of the early church worship Chan suggests that contemporary Protestant churches could be an authentic community by following the patterns (the Word and sacrament) and practices (catechumenate, Decalogue, creeds, Lord’s prayer, and so on) of the early Church. Chan’s liturgical theology provides contemporary Protestant churches with the need of recovering the traditional practices of worship that are central to identifying the church. Yet, Chan establishes his liturgical theology without dealing with the current practices of the Protestant worship as the main object of liturgical reflection, which is a major point to be considered. It seems that Chan ignores the gap between the ideal vision of worship and real practice of worship, which is the core theme of liturgical theology: lex orandi(rule of prayer), lex credendi (rule of faith). From a liturgical perspective Chan’s liturgical theology remains as a mere vision of worship by ignoring the given reality of contemporary Protestant churches. The ideal vision of worship does not automatically bring about the renewal of worship and that leaves ongoing pastoral tasks in
terms of worship renewal for contemporary Protestant churches.
