A performance of a diesel engine has been analyzed using a newly developed engine simulation model in order to clarify a relationship between reduced heat loss to coolant and thermal efficiency improvement. The results indicate that the thermal accumulation effect due to the large thermal capacity of the combustion chamber walls is the primary reason why a significant improment in thermal efficiency is not should be applied and the cylinder liner should not be insulated.
