Francesco de Miranda, from Venezuela, is a figure who fought in France's revolutionary war as a military officer. After a long transatlantic journey, he settled first in London and then in Paris, where he asked politicians for collaboration in order to realize his plan for South American liberation. Moreover, he is also a key man in the vast Brissotin project concerning the destruction of the Spanish colonies in America. However, he is deprived of his liberty in the complex political and diplomatic situation not only in France but also in Europe. During his political detention, he concretized his idea on the stable constitutional republic which was fashionable in the post-Thermidorian period. Author of several texts on the political and governmental system after 9 Thermidor Year II, Miranda was not a man ahead of his time, but rather a man of his time, that is to say the 18th century.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

프란시스코 미란다는 베네수엘라 출신으로 프랑스 혁명전쟁에도 군 지휘관으로 참가한 인물이었다. 대서양을 넘나드는 긴 여정 끝에 런던, 그리고 파리에 정착했고, 자신이 가진 남아메리카 해방 계획을 실행하기 위해 유럽 강국의 협력을 요구했다. 그리고 미란다는 프랑스 혁명기 브리소파가 세운 남아메리카 계획 속에서 중요한 인물로 부각되기도 했다. 그러나 당시 유럽의 정치 및 외교 상황, 그리고 프랑스 국내의 복잡한 상황에 얽히면서 자신의 자유를 잃었으며, 그 와중에 안정적인 입헌주의 공화국이라는 생각을 강화했다. 테르미도르 9일 이후 당시 정치적 분위기에 편승하는 글을 통해서 한 국가의 정체에 대한 비교적 구체적인 서술을 한 미란다는 시대를 앞서 나가는 인물이 아니었고, 당대의 관념에 충실한 인물이었다.
