THE recent difficulty in selecting a United States Minister to China emphasizes the importance which oriental affairs have assumed in American politics. It is not many years since no press comment would have been made upon the matter, for no one outside of official circles would have cared to read it. The space which has been given to it is evidence that it is now a matter of general interest, and hence of the changed attitude of public opinion toward oriental questions.
