건축에서의 시(時)와 간(間) : 건축의 기계적 기능에서 본 시간과 적시

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 건축을 정의하는데 있어서 기계의 개념을 이용하여 자유로운 사고를 하며 그것의 건축적인 이해와 적용을 실험하는데 그 목적을 둔다.
거기에 근거하여 이 연구는 건축의 경계선상에 존재하는 기계에 대해 인식하고 그것을 제작함으로써 건축의 경계를 확정짓는다. 또한 그것이 건축의 범주안에서 어떻게 작용할 것이며, 그 작용함에 있어 건축적으로 사고하는 과정에 어떻게 개입하는지에 대해 연구한다.
논문을 진행하는데 디자인 과정과 그 디자인이 나오게되는 배경에 대해서는 작가의 직관과 경험, 상상력에 근거를 둔다. 그것은 인간의 내부에 존재하는 의식과 무의식을 통해 건축적 재료가 스스로 나타내고자하는 인식에서 기인한다.
이러한 개념을 적용할 대상으로 세익스피어의 비극 중 ‘로미오와 줄리엣’을 선정하였다. 극중에서 두 주인공을 시간과 적시의 관점에서 해석하고, 이를 건축적으로 재현하여 두 인물을 전체의 이야기 속에서 통합적으로 상상할 수 있는 기계를 제작한다. 이 기계는 대상에 대한 상상력의 총체를 담는 그릇이며, 또 다른 상상을 할 수 있도록 해주는 자유로운 상상의 장(場)으로 작용함을 목적으로 한다.
논문의 진행 과정은 다음과 같다.
1. 건축의 기계적 기능에 대한 역사적 사례를 분석한다.
2. 작업을 몸에 기억시키기-역사적 사례를 보고 모형으로 구체화한다.
3. 다른 이미지로 모형을 제작하여 작업의 범위를 좁혀나간다
4. 인식의 장을 선정하고 그것을 시간의 관점에서 해석한다.
5. 선정된 것을 재해석하고 기계적 모델로 재현한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this thesis is to define architecture in its relationship to machine and to apply that understanding in the making of architecture. This work is done by placing machine at the boundary of architecture, and by drawing architecture within that boundary. Moreover, this thesis aims to ask how defining machine as architecture's boundary affects the way in which architecture opens up toward its own territoriality.
The design work concomitant to writing of this thesis rests on a faculty which lies extra-lingually: intuition, imagination and sensibility. The orientation of that faculty functions as a particular mental phenomenon taking place between the conscious and the subconscious toward an understanding of architecture's materiality.
The story of Romeo and Juliet serves as the scaffolding for the conceptual construction concerning Time and Timing in architectural terms. The machinic architecture here proposed in the form of six "towers" holds the story of the two lovers disunited along two different orbits of time. The "clock towers" are a product of reflection concerning the problem of measurement, and of the unmeasurable. The classical problem of rhythmia and arhythmia is here reformulated in terms of a machinic architectural mise-en-scene in which the story of Romeo and Juliet is re-presented to show the architectural theatre of chronos (empirical time) and aion (embodied time).
The design process is as follows:
1. Analysis of the historic precedents of architecture's machinic function.
2. Reconstruction of the precedents through models.
3. Expansion and reformulation of the models toward the idea.
4. Interpretation of time and timing as an architectural problem.
5. Architecturalization of the problem.
