In the history of Korean poetry, Seol Yo`s ``Bansokyo`` can be considered to be a shining streak of light in the circumstance of male writer-predominance. 9 works of Silla poets are included in ``Jeondangsi`` compiled during Cheon Dynasty, China. Among them, the poems written by female poets are only 2: ``Taepyungsing`` of Queen Jinduk and ``Bansokyo`` of Seol Yo. Therefore, there is no question about her (Seol Yo) literary standing in the history. Studies have been conducted mainly on ``Seol Yo`` herself and her husband Kwak Jin and her songs so far. And the focuses seem to remain within the boundary for the time being. Howver the present study attempted to chronologically track back the records about Seol Yo and her works that came out from the point when ``Bansokyo`` was written and to re-establish the status by supplementing and re-testifying them. First, information of her father and husband was examined through the review of Lee Duk Mu`s ``Compendium of Cheongjangkwan`` and Han Chi Yoon`s ``Haedong History``. Chinese ``Kudagseo`` and ``Sindangseo`` helped enrich information of Kwak Jin or and Kwak Won Jin. By extension, this study re-interpreted ````Bansokyo`` by examining its grammatical structures and particles in classical Chinese. In particular, ``洞寂滅兮不見人``, which is the second phrase of the poem, has given a broad room for different interpretations among writers but it can commonly be accepted that the phrase shows Seol Yo` innate emotion as a human and her ideological attitude as a Buddhist. If we take the latter`s point of view on her and her work, however, the poem ``Bansokyo`` should be regarded as being stained with religious colors and the main concept pursued by her in the poem ?``exclaustration`` and ``free life``- inevitably loses ground. Seol Yo showed admiration toward the characters who were politically on their way up and left a significant legacy in the political and literary history at that time. This compels our awe to her good judge of character.
