The Syntax of Tough-Construction in Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper investigates into the syntax of one of the toughest constructions yet to be analyzed. We argue that the tough-construction in Korean involves a raising of the embedded constituent headed by a D -ki, triggered by [EPP] feature of the matrix T. The DP exhibiting the case-alternation between nominative and accusative can "optionally" raise to the specifier position of -ki, resulting in a contrastive reading typical of the nominative-marked tough -construction.
