It is said that the main stream of the Korean Theoretical Buddhism is the Avatamsaka thought. the principal ideas of Rev. Chinul the Patriarch of the Orthodox Chogye Sect are also based on the Avatamsaka thoughts. In fact, it is impossible to understand Korean Buddhism without getting fully acquainted with the Avatamsaka thoughts.
Accomplished by Rev. Euisang and Rev. Wonhyo in the Shilla Dynasty, the Avatamsaka thoughts have been transmitted from the Koryo dynasty through the Yi dynasty to the modern era in Korea. Unfortunately, however, even though Rev. Euisang and Rev. Wonhyo wrote many books about the Avatamsaka thoughts, most of them are scattered and lost. Only a book named Hwaeum-illseung-Peopkye-do(Dharmadhatu Illustration of the One Avatamsaka Vehicle, 華嚴一乘法界圖) by Rev. Euisang is left. But the work is difficult to understand because it is too short, with very simple sentences.
Rev. Kyunyeo who was born at the beginning of the Koryo dynasty and who produced masterpieces on the Avatamsaka thoughts interpreted Rev. Euisang's abovementioned work in his Hwaeum-illseung-Peopkye-do Wontong-ki(A Narrative of Universality upon Dharmadhatu Illustration of the One Avatamsaka Vehicle, 華嚴一乘法界圖圓通記), one of his eighteen extant works and on which this paper will be concentrated in dealing with Rev. Kyunyeo's Avatamsaka thoughts.
