아르헨티나 국가형성기 지적담론 연구 = A Study on Intellectual Discourses During the Formative Period of a Modern State in Argentina - Focusing on the Generation of 37

국문 초록 (Abstract)

19세기 중반 아르헨티나는 대부분의 라틴아메리카 신생 독립국가들과 마찬가지로 심각한 외우내환에 시달리고 있었다. 하지만 난세에 영웅이 난다.’ 라는 말을 입증이나 하듯 이 시기에 아르헨티나 역사상 그 어느 때 보다도 뛰어난 인물들이 대거 출현했다. 에스떼반 에체베리아, 후안 마리아 구띠에레스, 후안 바우띠스따 알베르디, 도밍고 파우스띠노 사르미엔또 등 5월 혁명’을 전후해 태어난 새로운 주역들이 이 나라 역사의 전면에 등장했다. 이들은 대부분 당시 중남미에 막 유입되었던 유럽 낭만주의의 세례를 받은 ‘작가’ 이자 프랑스와 영국의 근대사상에 심취한 ‘사상가’ 였으며, 무엇보다도 정치사회적 혼란을 극복하고 신생독립국의 백년대계를 도모하고자 현실에 뛰어들었던 ‘행동가’ 들이었다. 소위 ‘37세대’라 불리는 이들은 평생 아르헨티나의 국가적 제도화와 정체성 모색에 치열한 노력을 기울였으며, 그 결과 시대와 국경을 넘어 라틴아메리카의 사상과 문학사에 큰 족적을 남겼다.
본 연구는 37세대의 핵심 인물들을 중심으로 이들의 세대적 특성을 분석하고, 주요 저작에 제시된 정치사회적 주장들을 비교, 분석할 것이다. 특히, 이 과정에서 그동안 동질적인 집단으로 인식되어 온 37세대가 실은 내적으로 상이한 현실인식은 물론 상반된 주장으로 점철되었던 이질적인 성격의 지식인들이었음을 규명하고자 한다. 이 연구를 통해 19세기 중반의 아르헨티나를 ‘로사스’ 나 ‘파꾼도’, 혹은 ‘문명과 야만’ 과 같은 몇몇 상징적인 키워드로 일괄해서 이해하려는 기존의 일반적인 인식이 재고(再考)될 수 있을 것이다.
한편, 본 연구는 37세대 주역들이 남긴 1차 문헌 중심의 실증적인 접근이라는 점에 또 다른 의미가 있다. 37세대 인물들의 명성과 중남미 지성사에서 차지하는 비중에도 불구하고, 그동안 국내학계에서는『파꾼도』와 같은 대표적인 고전 이외에 그들의 육성이 직접 전해진 바가 극히 드물었다. 본 연구에 언급된 문헌 목록들은 후속 연구를 위한 작은 디딤돌이 될 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the mid-19th century and like other newly independent countries among Latin America, Argentina and individual other countries experienced numerous politico-social problems and suffered from lacks of leadership, or intellectual thoughts for building a new independent state. At that time, however, for Argentina, it is witnessed some of the most distinguished intellectual figures in her history, such as Esteban Echeverría, Juan Bautista Alberdi, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Juan María Gutiérrez, Bartolomé Mitre, Vicente Fidel López, Miguel Cané, among others.
Most of those intellectuals were the greatest authors inspired by European romanticism and great thinkers influenced by modern philosophy. Above all, they were also in the forefront of socio-political reforms via taking a active part in reality to overcome many socio-political crises at that time. They are usually called the“Generation of 37”and many experts assessed that those intellectuals devoted their own life to devising the state organization and building for new identity of Argentine homeland.
Based on this background, this article tried to analyze the generational characteristics of this intellectual group, focused attention on some notable members in the "Generation of 37", such as Echeverría, Alberdi, Sarmiento and Gutiérrez. As analyzing method, this article compared the real differences of socio-political ideologies among them identified in their main works. This article will help to understand the early state-building process in Argentina during the nineteenth century.
