The purpose of this paper is to analyze the semantic extension that occurs in the process of 〔adjective→verb〕 and 〔adjective→noun〕 conversion based on metonymy.
Accordingly, this paper finds some implications on the intercategorial polysemy in 〔adjective→verb〕 and 〔adjective→noun〕 conversion.
First, the meaning extension in the process of 〔adjective→verb〕 and 〔adjective→ noun〕 conversion takes place based not only on the interpretive meaning of a word, but also on the concept evoked by it. The cognitive link of such 〔adjective→verb〕 and 〔adjective→noun〕 conversion pairs could be explained through metonymy.
Second, the semantic extension in 〔adjective→verb〕 and 〔adjective→noun〕 conversion occurs not only across categories, but also within the category before or after the conversion. The meanings of deadjectival verbs and deadjectival nouns can be derived from the extended meaning as well as the basic meaning of their parent adjective.
Third, 〔adjective→verb〕 and 〔adjective→noun〕 conversion happen through various derivation paths, and the semantic relatedness between the base adjective, and the derived verb and noun has weakened as the meaning extension continues. Unlike deadjectival verbs, deadjectival nouns can be derived through 〔adjective→verb→noun〕 conversion by allowing the intervention of other parts of speech in the conversion process.
