Positioning of Mature Nursing Students at Institutional and Societal Levels

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 학교와 사회의 시스템과 문화가 전문대 간호학과 만학도를 어떻게 포지셔닝(positioning)하는지와 그 안에서 간호학과 만학도의 포지셔닝을 분석하였다. 본 연구는 2018학년도에 간호학과에 입학한 2019년 기준 평균 나이 35세의 간호학과 만학도 학생 4명을 대상으로 진행되었다. 포지셔닝을 분석하기 위해 반구조적 심층 인터뷰가 이용되었다. 본 연구는 학교와 학교의 만학도 입학 전형과 학생번호 부여 시스템을 제도적 차원으로 하고, 병원과 병원의 시스템과 문화를 사회적 차원으로 하여 이들과 간호학과 만학도 간의 포지셔닝에 초점을 맞추어 포지셔닝 이론(Positioning Theory)의 틀 아래에서 데이터를 분석하였다. 이 연구는 만학도 입학전형과 같은 학교의 시스템이 입학 시 간호학과 만학도를 도움이 필요한 대상으로 포지셔닝 한다는 것과 향후 그들의 직업시장이 되는 병원과 병원의 시스템과 문화는 그들을 일반학생과 동등하지 않게 포지셔닝하는 경향이 있음을 발견하였다. 또한, 간호학과 만학도 학생들이 학교와 사회 안에서 자신의 포지션에 대한 고심하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 이를 바탕으로 본고는 학교와 병원 그리고 그들의 시스템과 문화가 간호학과 만학도를 제도적, 사회적 차원에서 어떻게 고려해야 하는지에 대한 시사점을 제시한다.

This study aims to analyze and discuss how mature nursing students at a vocational college interactively position the College, hospitals, and their system and culture, and how they reflexively position themselves in them. Four mature nursing students whose average age was 35 in 2019 participated in this research. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data for the analysis. Under the framework of Positioning Theory (Davies and Harré 1990, 1999), the focus of this study was on examining how the College and its systems like the admission process and the student ID numbering system define and treat mature nursing students at the institutional level and how the system and culture of hospitals position them at the societal level (Fairclough 2001). The findings show that the systems in the College interactively position mature nursing students as those who need help. However, the systems and culture in hospitals tend to position mature nursing students not equally with traditional students. The findings also demonstrate that mature nursing students struggle to be positioned as students equally with traditional students. These findings suggest that the College and hospitals’ consistent consideration of mature nursing students’ position is needed at the institutional and societal level.
