지구화 시대 지역연구 지식의 재구성: 방법에 대한 논의를 중심으로 = Recomposition of Knowledge on Regional Studies in the Age of Globalization: With special reference to the Debate on Methodology

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1990년대 이후 지구화 논쟁이 가속화됨에 따라 공간으로서의 지역 개념과 아시아 지역연구에 대한 문제가 (재)부상하게 되었다. 일국의 특수성과 자세한 기술이 특징인 지역연구의 쇠퇴가 논의되는 한편, 지역성에 기반을 둔 지식생산이 강조되기도 하였다. 여성학계에서도 아시아 여성에 대한 수동적인 재현의 문제가 지적되면서 지역성, 장소, 토착성 등을 강조한 지식생산이 잇따랐다. 이 글은 서구의 지식생산 과정에서 지구화와 지역연구를 둘러싼 논쟁과 아시아 국가 및 아시아 여성의 재현의 정치를 점검하고 있다. 지구화의 보편주의에 맞서는 지역성, 특수성의 논리가 지니고 있는 본질주의적 경향과 이 논리의 기저에 작용하고 있는 서구와 비서구, 지구와 지역의 이분법 패러다임의 문제점을 살피고 있다. 이를 극복하는 한 방법으로서 이분법적 패러다임을 비판하고, 구체성과 실재를 강조하는 사실주의 분석(realistic analysis)을 제시하고 있다. 이를 통해 아시아 지역연구는 아래로부터의 물리적·문화적 지구화를 실천하는 아시아인의 다층적 면모(정치경제적 행위성)를 살피는 작업임을 설명하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

As the debate on globalization that began in the 1990s accelerates, the issue of Asian regional studies and the understanding of region as a space have (re)emerged. The new debate has observed two different trends. One is the declining number of country-specific researches that describe the particularities of that country. The other is the emphasis on production of new knowledge that is based on locality. Within a feminist academic community, problems of representation of Asian women as passive victims have been identified. In response, there have been an array of new research that shed light on the significance of locality, indigenity and space. This study explores the representation of Asian countries and Asian women in the debate of globalization and regional studies. This paper questions the essentialist tendency of regional studies against universalist globalization discourse and the dichotomous paradigm between western and non western, locality and globalization identified in the essentialist tendency. As a way of overcoming such tendencies, this study suggests a realistic analysis, which emphasizes specificity and actuality and questions the dichotomous paradigm. Through this suggestion, this study shows that regional study is an endeavor that explores the multiple facets (politic-economic agencies) of the Asian people practicing both material and cultural globalization from the below.
