The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that, seen from the processes of the establishment of the EAS in 2005, Japan's strategy of East Asian regionalism is still adhering to the traditional three pillars of pro-American, pro-Asia-Pacific, and pro-Southeast Asian policy orientations. Furthermore, this article argues that Japan's regionalist strategy, despite Japan's active involvement in the APT cooperation, has not been changed so much until recently as the results of strategic calculations in the midst of rapid changes in the East Asian power distribution as well as of path dependent choices.
